So, this past Sunday [livejournal.com profile] warinbear ran his d20 game.

I want to thank you, love. Here I was, somewhat worried that being an exalted, spellfire-wielding, seriously multi-classed character might be power-gaming. I know that [livejournal.com profile] ebonunicorn was somewhat worried that you considered his character to be unbalancing. That whole thing about him being a seriously heavy fighter who can drop most things within a few rounds, I think.

3 huge scorpions, 3 phase spiders, 1 shadow spider, 3 spider-leg horrors, and 4 drider later, I don't feel worried anymore. The underground trip we're making is supposed to be 5 days there, 5 days back. We got one day in and ran into the scoropins, followed literally instantly by the phase spiders. We rested for a day, and then continued. We got about 900 feet past where we'd been resting when we ran into the shadow spider. It fled within two rounds. 100 feet past that, and we ran into the horrors and the drider, who had apparantly set up an ambush site. One very close-call combat later, and we needed to rest for another full day again.

The normal going rate for the water from the underground spring that we're going to is about 5 gold per waterskin. We are currently looking at charging anywhere from 25 to 50 per at this point. Now we know why this water is so hard to come by, and why those stupid dwarven craftsmen wouldn't come get it themselves, even though the spring is five days directly under their freakin' town.

Maybe we can get some positive PR with the dwarves when we let them know that the trail has been rather heavily cleaned out.

Someone should teach those dwarves how to read a Teleport scroll :)

Heh. Actually, I thought of that ahead of time -- the water has to be brought back without the use of magic, since that fouls the esoteric associations. No teleporting, no bags of holding, not even Tenser's Floating Disk -- although letting the paladin's special mount, the unicorn, carry it is okay, if they can talk her into it. ('Course, they could still go down by teleporting . . . if they could find a qualified mage who knew the destination and was crazy or desperate enough to go . . .)

They don't even know what else is on the route, or what they left behind them to take back over the trail before they return. Heh. I'm evil, aren't I?

In this case, yay evil :)

I once had a really great series of games just about "opening the river road" - it was a road that had been in disuse for so long that people had to go the long way around to a certain Northern city.

There were no mercenary companies willing to fight through with the PCs (even though their backers had the money to hire them), the only group foolish or brave enough to go up with them was a troupe of bards who wanted the glory and / or the reputation.

Such a simple premise makes really great stories.

And said group of bards kicked the bad guys' asses, too, now didn't we? Trolls, orcs, war-bands of gnolls, wyverns, magic-mushroom-made 'em-crazy road pirates, river pirates, insanely overpowered evil druid complete with demonic minions, and those nasty huge mosquito-type flying monsters. All dead. So there. Next person who makes fun of my flute is in deep shit, baby.

Well, you didn't exactly keep the combat quiet, y'know.

We got about 900 feet past where we'd been resting when we ran into the shadow spider. It fled within two rounds.

Wouldn't you? Here it was expecting a nice, easy snack, and bam! Twelve seconds later its hit points have gone from triple digits to single.

The normal going rate for the water from the underground spring that we're going to is about 5 gold per waterskin.

That's because the typical party going down plans to make their real profit from the loot they collect off the monsters. Dwarves are stereotypical for their practicality.
