Louis' dad and grandad came up to look at the car and yeah, it looks like it's the serpentine belt. Not something we want to fuck with ourselves, since those are the two that have the know-how, and they're *very* iffy about trying to replace the belt, since timing it wrong = Bad.

From what I can tell online though, price to have a shop replace it should be around $200 ish. Throw in another $20-$40 for the tow.

-sigh- Now we just need to find a shop in the area that's trustworthy. Oh, and make sure we have the money for the tow and repair. State of TN is supposed to be sending us a check this week, so I think it likely that car repair will be happening with that, and we will be just loving folks for forever for the help with the gas money. They're gonna be paying the hotel up front as well; reserving the room and everything. We're also supposed to have our food reimbursed, up to a certain amount a day. Not sure what that amount is yet. We'll be in TN from about the 10th to the 15th. Sadie will be coming with us and staying at Warin's for the trial, since she won't really let anyone else get close to her. Friend of Louis' will be coming by in the evenings to feed and water the cats and scoop the litter-box.

And our subpoenas got here. After this is all done, we're gonna use those as our 'get new DL and car registered' proof of residence thingies. Local government is pretty anal about it needing to be something official like a utility or something for proof. I would say a freakin' subpoena is pretty damn official, wouldn't you?

Good luck with all of this. It seems it never rains, but pours. Time for a bit of sunshine and silver lining for you.

I strongly recommend that you hang on to the check from TN -- don't cash it, don't make any plans other than road snacks and gas that depend on the money from it -- until shortly before you head back this way. I can just imagine the DA's reaction -- "That money you sent us to get us over there? It's spent. Can you send us some more?"

Well, Louis' dad just loaned us the car repair money. So, car's in the shop.

DA has also already said that the check he's sending us isn't all the money that they'll be allocating to us, it's just what he's managed to get them to forward.

But yeah, we're gonna be avoiding touching the check as much as we can. I t was just that we didn't think we'd be able to repair the car otherwise.
