Books and Movies
Dec. 14th, 2004 07:07 amThe Borrowers Horridly done. The BBC did a miniseries a while back that is so much better that words fail me. The only things that the movie had in common with the book was the name and little people.
Stuart Little First off, Mrs. Little gave birth to Stuart. Okay? They did not adopt him. Again, merry hell was played with a very good book. I sat and sputtered through most of the movie when I first saw it. With the fellow E.B. White fan that was sitting next to me. He heard my first hiss of outrage, and we spent the rest of the movie quietly howling in anguish together.
Harry Potter So far, they're doing reasonably okay. They went through the third movie too quickly for my tastes, but they also changed directors from the first two. The director for the fourth movie is someone else. Here's hoping that they do a good job, and that they don't suddenly start to get squeamish as the books grow up.
Lord of the Rings The words 'wow', and 'wonderful', and 'fuckin' A!' spring most immediately to mind. Mr. Jackson, you done gooood. He's moving on to do The Hobbit next. I'm very eager to see it come out.
Currently, War of the Worlds has trailers out. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is being made. I forget when A Series of unfortunate Events is due out, but it's been filmed. And, they're doing production work on His Dark Materials.
His Dark Materials already looks to be shaky at best. The studio overseeing it has already nixed any mention of God or the Church, which is sort of like doing the Harry Potter movies without mentioning magic at all. Or showing magic being used.
I've seen the trailer for A Series of Unfortunate Events. I haven't read the books yet, so I don't know how true to the books it will be. The trailer looks like it captures the spirit of what I've been told about the boooks, though, so I'm hoping they did good with that one.
My computer doesn't like any trailer that I've found for War of the Worlds I'm pretty hopeful about this one. I first read the book when I was about nine years old, and it's been my favourite of H.G. Wells's books ever since. It also scared the living hell out of at least one of my grade school teachers when I choose it for the class assignment to draw your favourite scene out of a book.
Disney is doing The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I want to hope, but I've seen what Disney has done with other books that they've turned into movies. I get the feeling that I'll be left liking the look of the movie, but longing for the British miniseries that I loved so much because they did it right. I'm still waiting for the 'Making of' trailer to finish downloading as of this writing. Hopefully I'll know more of how the movie will turn out once I manage to see the trailer.
