So, the house came with these four brick planters, right? Two months of nothing much being done with them led to rapid weed growth, with two of the planters playing hose to bush/tree plants. Well, the low lying grassy weeds are still there, but I've seriously whacked down the tree/bush things. Some spades and a bit of hacking ought to clear the bds out the rest of the way.
Then, fertilizer will be worked into the dirt over the fall. Straw might get thrown in to decompose as well. Come spring, dwarf fruit bushes will be going in. Namely, blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries. I will be aiming for breeds that have the keyword 'hardy' in their description. This will hopefully mean 'mostly idiot proof'.
In any case, I have a mostly unlandscaped, undeveloped yard out here. I am looking forward to the next several years worth of changing that. :)

I do have one tip that I picked up from my sister... find an Alpaca ranch and get the Alpacas to make a donation to the fertilizer fund... I understand it's FABULOUS in gardens! I have a bag that I'll be mixing into the garden soil over the winter myself, probably in a big trash can just for that...
